What are the core values of the movement?

The three basic core values of the Tea Party are fiscal responsibility, limited government, and free markets. America is now over 13 trillion in debt and will soon reach the point of national debt exceeding the GDP. Our members know that spending in Washington is totally out of control and the only way to slow it down is to elect into office candidates who share our views on fiscal responsibility. We firmly believe in limited government as set forth in the US Constitution and further explained in The Federalist Papers. All members should read these documents and decide for themselves if and where our government has exceeded its authority and how it is in the process of centralizing power which was sternly warned against in The Federalist Papers. We also believe in the free market system. The federal government is now directly involved in the banking industry, the health care industry, and the automobile industry. What's next? We believe that the federal government needs to return to its original task as set forth in the Federalist Papers and that is to protect individual liberties and to work for the common good of the people. We support a return to free market principals which is a liberty that this country was founded on, and we oppose government interference into the operations of private businesses.

Who started the movement?

One version of who started the movement credits Ron Paul's presidential campaign in the fall of 2007. On the anniversary of the Boston Tea Party, his campaign raised over 6 million dollars in one day. As a result, it is rumored that plans began to organize more "tea parties". Another version credits an internet blogger who goes by the screen name GMAK for starting the movement in 2009. He started a blog post suggesting that individuals send tea bags to their congressmen as a form of protesting high taxes. The actual credit for starting the movement is still being debated, but the original credit goes back to 1773 and the "Sons of Liberty" who were protesting the high taxes imposed on the colonies.
